Volunteer Information
Operations
The operational division of PVRS is responsible for the delivery of emergency medical and rescue services to the community. Operations members comprise the ambulance and medic crews that respond to incidents, as well as the line officers who manage the allocation of resources so that the community is best served. Divided into four different membership types, with different hour requirements.
- Junior: For members ages 16-17. Hour requirements are handled on a case-by-case basis.
- Senior: For members ages 18+. Requires 12 hours per week of duty time, with an additional 12 hour weekend duty crew per month.
- Academic: For students only, who cannot commit to 12 hours per week. Requires 144 hours of duty crew, per year. For students who can only run during school breaks or summer vacation.
- Active Support: For members 18+, who cannot commit to 12 hours per week. Requires 18 hours of duty crew per month.
Operational Crews
Each operational division duty crew in PVRS comprises of an Attendant in Charge (who is at least 18 years old, and an EMT, trained to at least the Basic Level), an EVOC-certified driver (who is at least 18 years old), and two Aides (who can range in level of training). These crews are the ones that respond to calls, deliver pre-hospital emergency care, and then transport patients to a recieving facility.
EMT Levels
Becoming an operational member of PVRS means taking your first steps toward becoming an Emergency Medical Technician. There are four levels of EMT certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and an additional certification for non-EMS providers. PVRS members practice at all levels; Attendants/Officers in Charge must be an EMT-Basic at a minimum. These levels of training are: First Responder (for drivers, firefighters, and police), EMT-Basic (BLS level), EMT-Enhanced (ALS introductory level), EMT-Intermediate (ALS), and EMT-Paramedic (Advanced ALS Level).
Emergency Vehicle Operators Certification
EVOC is a required course for all members interested in being an ambulance driver. To become released as a driver, members must complete a documented 10 hours of pre-course driving and familiarzation, participation and completion in the EVOC course, and then 10 hours of post-course driving, familiarzation, and running calls. All of this is done with a preceptor, who will monitor your driving and provide helpful feedback. Members intersted in becoming drivers must be at least 18 years old, and have a clean driving record for the past 12 months (some exceptions). Drivers are not required to be EMTs, though like all operational members they are highly encouraged to attain EMT-Basic, and higher, certification, or at the least First Responder.

Administration
The essential backbone of PVRS are those members who decide not to ride ambulances, but to ride deskchairs, and to help in the organization and administration of the company. Administrative members are highly involved in the day-to-day running and operation of the company, and in the future success of the company. Tasks can include working with one of the committees involved in company business, preparing fundraiser letters, IT/Tech support, maintanance and creation of Bylaws, financial matters, and many others. Administrative members are not required to attain certifications such First Responder or EMT, but they are required to attend Volunteer Orientation and CPR for Healthcare Providers.
Inactive Support
Inactive Support members attend and help out at company functions, such as the Open House, Annual Banquet, and more. No age or time commitment limits. Great for members who cannot run operationally either due to time commitments/disability/other, parents and their children, or Senior Citizens. Inactive Support is the same as Auxiliary in some other Fire/Rescue companies.
